The Creation Of A Painting

Visit Project

These images follow the creation of the painting ‘Memory Drift’ from stretching the canvas to completion. (step by step info and more images to come shortly)

  • Using tacks and a great magnetic hammer lent to me by a friend, I place the first tack in the centre of one side of the canvas. Got to start somewhere.
    Stretching the canvas
  • Stretching the canvas evenly is not easy and requires constant tweaking as I work my way from the center outwards.
    Stretching the canvas
  • I use a special canvas stretching pliers to stretch the canvas tight. As I have used a pre-primed canvas, it stretches less easily than one that hasn't been primed. Pliers saves my knuckles.
    Stretching the canvas
  • You can see here how the canvas is gradually pulled tight from the centre of one side outwards. With each stretch of the pliers I add one or two tacks and then move outwards a bit. After working a little on one side I switch to another side to ensure the canvas is being stretched evenly across all parts.
